Have you seen the one about … MUSIC

There are movies. There is music. There are musicals. And then there are movies about music. Here are some of the best! In my humble opinion.

Almost Famous
Based on the life of writer/director Cameron Crowe and his time writing for “Rolling Stone,” this story about a teenage journalist on tour with a 70’s rock band on their rise to fame has everything. Great characters, heartfelt story, and great music, naturally.

Empire Records
A lot can happen when you work at a record store. Follow a group of employees on the ups and downs of one day at work. Anything can happen, and almost everything does.

A Mighty Wind
Brilliant Christopher Guest mockumentary about three folk groups reuniting for a tribute concert. It’s hilarious, but what makes it better is that the music doesn’t suck.

This is Spinal Tap
“But these go to 11.” ‘Nuff said.

Walk the Line
Johnny Cash is a pioneer in music industry and this bio-pic does him justice. Joaquin Phoenix and Reece Witherspoon are perfectly cast as the first couple of country music.

That Thing You Do
Tom Hanks’ directorial debut is just fun. Good cast, funny story, and catchy tunes.

Crazy Heart
Jeff Bridges proved once and for all why he’s lasted in Hollywood as long as he has. He’s good. And the guy can sing too.

Detroit Rock City
It’s the 1970’s and your mom just burned your tickets to KISS. What would you do? Four friends go on and epic adventure in hopes of joining the KISS army.

Mr. Holland’s Opus
Well-written tale about a high school music teacher and his career over several decades gets me every time.

  2. Detroit Rock City is my favorite of these. Hardly anyone has seen it though.
